I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED | MY SECRETS TO FIGHT A COLD

I will not be sick!

As you may recall from one of my earlier posts, Mialyna and Sam have been down with a cold for the past few days! I swear being sick in the summer is just the worst and I refuse to be sick! But, this morning I woke up with the sniffles and I just knew the evil cold was coming for me next! The upcoming weekend is a long weekend here for us and we have a day trip to Tobermory planned that was postponed from July. So, I will NOT allow myself to get sick! Also, I'm sure all you mamas can relate that when mom gets sick it's the worst! Some how everything goes downhill! Kids end up jumping off walls, take out dinner is inevitable, and the house becomes a disaster. Also, to avoid all this from happening we never let ourselves rest AND we always end up being sick the longest! Lucky for me, I have lots of help whenever I'm not well (so I can't complain too much). Also, it sucks when you end up getting sick and you have maxed out your sick days at work for all the days your little one was ill so you could snuggle them (my current situation). So, I thought since I'm trying to defeat this cold and help my baby girl feel better I would share my tricks to fighting a cold since I feel like I do have some tricks you wouldn't think of!

1. Take your medicine right away & on time

I'm sorry I am not one of those moms who are afraid of meds or shy away from them. I cannot stand feeling sick or seeing my daughter sick! So, I always make sure that we take our meds as soon as we feel a bit under the weather and I make sure to set alarms to make sure we are taking it on time. I even wake up in the middle of the night to take them! Set your alarms!

2. Use cold milk to fight a fever

This is a remedy that I learned from my nani (grandma) that just works! I have no idea why, but it's like magic! I grew up with my nani and mom doing this to me and I've used this trick on Mialyna since she was a little one! All you got to do is take some cold milk in a bowl and a towel and pat the milk on your forehead, hands, and your feet. Make sure to leave a milk soaked cloth on your forehead for a bit as well! It works great at dropping the fever way better than cold water! This was a lifesaver when Mialyna was a baby and had a fever!

3. Stay hydrated - drink your lemon water!

There is so many benefits to drinking lemon water and I actually make it a part of my morning to drink 1L of lemon water while getting ready for work and on route. It's great at detoxing and will keep you hydrated! You should just try to start everyday with it even when you aren't feeling under the weather! If you don't like the taste of lemon at least try to drink a lot of water throughout the day (my personal goal is 4L a day).

4. Sweat it out!

I know the last thing you want to do when your feeling sick is workout! But, it really helps push out all the toxins and it also helps keep your mind off being sick. Mind over matter! I know others may believe otherwise, but this usually helps me in the early stages of my cold! However, if you are feeling fatigue or weak - do not workout!

5. Vicks it up!

Vicks is life! My daughter hates when I put vicks on her and to be honest I don't love it either! But, it works! I always make sure to put some on our foreheads, back , wrists, and bottom of our feet. The key is to get the bottom of your feet and immediately put on socks!

6. Golden Milk

I know turmeric is all the rage right now! But, I promise I'm not trying to be trendy! This is something that my family has done since I was a little kid. I do come from an indian background so my nani does use turmeric quite a bit. But, it always comes out when we aren't feeling the best! Turmeric has so many benefits and I encourage you all to do a quick google search on them. To check out my golden milk recipe click here. 7. Get ready & be positive!

The last thing I want to do is get ready when I'm sick- I much rather be in burrito status with no makeup on curled up on the couch. However, I always feel worse when I just spend the day in my pjs looking like a mess. Instead get up, freshen up, and get ready! You don't need to be glam or anything! But, I always feel better when I actually get dressed. Mind over matter! I definitely got ready this morning for work and looked myself in the mirror and repeated probably 10x "I will not be sick! let's kick this cold's ass!".

8. Kombucha!

Yet another trendy drink, but it works! I actually try to have kombucha everyday or every other day (it's expensive and this mama is on a budget). It is a acquired taste, but it helps! It's full of antibiotic and probiotic properties, which is great for when you are fighting a cold! It's also great for digestion, detoxification, immunity, and your metabolism - which is all great for when you are sick! My personal favourite at the moment is the Hibiscus & Rose Hips one by Rise!

9. Eat your fruit and veggies!

Here is my mommy side coming out! But, seriously... eat your fruits and veggies! They are full of goodness that will help give your body the nutrition it needs! Also, it's super light which is great when you don't feel like eating too much!

10. Rest!

Make sure you get some rest and take it easy! I know this is a typical one, but it is so important. Also, I know all you mamas need a reminder to rest and let your body have time to heal or fight off the virus.
